UFCJC students recognized in 2026 AEJMC Student Magazine Contest
Three University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism students were recognized in the 2026 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Student Magazine Contest in the Magazine Media Division. The winning articles were published in Atrium Magazine, the award-winning student-produced magazine Florida-centric narrative nonfiction.
In the Feature category, Olivia Evans received first place for “From Backyards to Belts.” The judges were impressed with all the authors of this year’s winning stories because of their ambition, reporting prowess and skillful writing, including Evans’ balanced detailed scenes and character descriptions with reporting on both sides of the debate over what to do with Florida’s “nuisance alligators.”
In the Writing category, Delia Rose Sauer received second place for “Ham, Pork, Pickles and Pride.” According to the judges, “A dairy allergy can’t stop Delia Rose Sauer from diving into the history, culture and cosmic meaning of Miami’s Cuban sandwich scene. Her account of the griddled ham-and-cheese dish’s journey through the Cuban diaspora is packed with solid food writing and tasty details on the proper assembly of a true Cubano, seasoned with just enough of her personal story and perspective.”
Pristine Thai received third place in the Profile category for “Love, Ed.” The judges found that the story for was nicely researched and Thai picked out solid quotes from letters that guide the story’s flow.
The contest was judged by 15 working journalists who volunteered their time and expertise.
The competition received 221 entries from 22 different schools in 11 categories featuring work completed between June 2025 and June 2026. The winners were announced at the 2026 AEJMC Conference in New Orleans from Aug. 5-8.
