Ryan Hunt named UFCJC associate director of sports media

Ryan Hunt, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism sports lecturer, has been named associate director of sports media for the College. Hunt will continue to serve as a lecturer while taking on an expanded leadership role supporting the continued growth of Sports@CJC and the college’s experiential learning opportunities in sports media.

Since returning to his alma mater in 2023 after a distinguished 25-year career at Sports Illustrated, including four years as co-editor-in-chief, Hunt has played a key role in expanding the College’s sports media program through innovative teaching, experiential learning and industry partnerships.

Among his many accomplishments is the launch of Grandstand Magazine, the college’s student-run sports publication, where he serves as faculty advisor. The publication debuted online in November 2025, followed by its inaugural print edition in spring 2026. In its first year, Grandstand earned national and state recognition through the Hearst Journalism Awards, Associated Press Sports Editors, the Florida Society of News Editors and the SPJ Region 3 MARK of Excellence and SPJ Florida Sunshine State Awards.

Hunt has also developed immersive learning opportunities through programs including CJCxNYC, coverage of the U.S. Open and Major League Baseball spring training, and the college’s UF in the UK study-abroad program. He established UF’s first Associated Press Sports Editors student chapter, expanding professional networking, scholarship and career opportunities for students. His commitment to student success was recognized this year when he was named the College’s 2026 Undergraduate Teacher of the Year and selected as a finalist for the SPJ Sunshine State Awards Adviser of the Year.
