UFCJC student journalists and alumnus selected for 2026 National NAHJ Student Project Team and prestigious scholarships
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) student journalists and an alumnus have been recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) for their academic achievements and for representing the next generation of Latino journalists.
Nicole Beltran, B.S. Journalism 2026, was selected for the 2026 NAHJ conference Student Project Team in New Orleans from July 22-25. She will work with experienced journalists to cover both the conference and the Latino community during the event. The stories will be posted on the Latino Reporter Digital, the website dedicated to the conference student project.
NAHJ has also awarded scholarships to four UFCJC students.
Journalism senior Isabela Reinoso received the Lori Montenegro Scholarship. Montenegro is Telemundo Network’s D.C. bureau chief and NAHJ Hall of Fame Honoree. The $5,000 grants are for Afro-Latino students pursuing a career in journalism and communications.
Candy Theresa Fontana Verde received the Cecilia Alvear Scholarship which provides financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate student members of NAHJ who are interested in preparing for a career as a producer in broadcast journalism. Former NAHJ president, Cecilia Alvear, was a producer at NBC for 25 years and fought for the inclusion of Latinos in newsrooms.
Journalism senior Sofia Alamo and Journalism junior Natalia Lopez each received a Ruben Salazar Scholarship. The $2,000 award was established in 1986 to assist young Latino journalists and is named after Mexican-American journalist Ruben Salazar who was a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and the news director for the Spanish-language television station KMEX.
The theme of the 2026 NAHJ Conference is “The Beat Goes On: Honoring Our Roots and the Future of Hispanic Journalism. The event offers development opportunities with leading Hispanic journalists and media professionals as well as workshops and panels that provide essential tools for career growth in a rapidly evolving industry.
