Four UFCJC alumni qualify for 2025-26 Hearst Journalism Awards National Championships
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) May 2026 Journalism graduates Jessica Garcette, Juan Carlos Chaoui, Bernie Montas and Nicole Borman, have qualified to compete in the 66th annual Hearst Journalism Awards National Championships to be held in San Francisco May 30 – June 5, 2026. The National Championship competition includes 29 finalists representing 17 universities from across the county.
UFCJC finalists will compete in three categories. Chaoui and Montas will be in the Television competition, Garcette in the Writing competition and Nicole Borman in the Multimedia contest.
The finalists’ monthly competition entry submissions were selected as the best from the 1,353 entries received in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program this year. During the Championships, the finalists will fulfill spot assignments selected by a panel of media professional judges, vying for scholarship awards of $1,500 to $10,000 in each category.
Presently, 104 colleges and universities with accredited undergraduate journalism schools are eligible to participate in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Funded and administered for 66 years by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, the Journalism Program awards up to $700,000 in scholarships, grants and stipends annually.
UFCJC Dean Hub Brown and Journalism Department Chair and Senior Lecturer Harrison Hove will also travel to San Francisco for the competition
