Two UFCJC faculty members receive 2026 Professional Summer Awards
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) faculty members, Journalism Senior Lecturer Herbert Lowe and Advertising Associate Instructional Professor Elizabeth “Lissy” Calienes, have been selected as recipients of UFCJC’s 2026 Faculty Professional Summer Awards. These awards support faculty in pursuing immersive professional experiences that strengthen the connection between industry practice and the classroom.
Lowe will continue his impactful public-facing scholarship documenting the contributions and legacy of Black journalists, with a focus on the historically significant “Black List.” His work will produce a verified, accessible record of journalists’ careers and influence while informing updates to his Race, Sports and Media course. This effort directly connects research, teaching and industry engagement, creating meaningful resources for students and the profession.
Calienes will serve as the dean of the Roger Hatchuel Student Academy at the prestigious 2026 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in Cannes, France. She will collaborate with global industry leaders to shape programming and mentor emerging student talent from around the world. Through this experience, she will bring back insights into global creative strategy, AI integration and cross-cultural storytelling. Her efforts will help strengthen student opportunities and industry partnerships.
Both projects exemplify the spirit of the Faculty Professional Summer Program by advancing professional excellence while enriching the student experience.
