Two UFCJC alumni honored in 2025-26 Hearst Journalism Awards Personality/Profile competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism alumni Tarryn Nichols and Lauren Brensel placed third and sixth, respectively, in the 2025-26 Hearst Journalism Awards Personality Profile Competition. The contest, the third writing competition of the academic year, drew 130 entries from 82 schools.
Nichols’ entry, “The Oaks Will Remember,” focused on a widow who continues to watch over a haven for animals that she and her husband built from bare earth. Brensel’s entry, “Fists of a Fighter, Heart of an Angel,” chronicled the story of mixed martial arts fighter Angel Keihl. Both entries were published in the Spring 2025 edition of Atrium Magazine.
Currently, UFCJC is in first place in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition with the highest accumulated student points.
The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 66th year, added broadcast journalism competitions in 1988. In addition to the broadcast competitions, the awards program includes four writing, two photojournalism and four multimedia contests. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends and is open to accredited undergraduate journalism programs from 104 schools within the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.
