UFCJC alumna places fourth in 2025-26 Hearst Audio News and Features Competition

Sofia Zarran, B.S. Journalism 2025, received fourth place in the 2025-26 Hearst Journalism Awards Audio News/Features competition. The contest received a record 78 entries submitted from 51 universities.

Zarran was recognized for “Alachua School District: What it Means to Lose and Keep a Superintendent” and “Between Pressure and Hope: How an English Class Can Help Gainesville Immigrants Bridge a Cultural Divide.” She is now working as a “Morning Edition” producer for public media station WLRN in Miami.

UF is currently in second place in the Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition based on the number of accumulated student points so far this year.

The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 66th year, added broadcast journalism competitions in 1988. In addition to the broadcast competitions, the awards program includes four writing, two photojournalism and four multimedia contests. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends and is open to accredited undergraduate journalism programs from 104 within the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.
