UFCJC to induct four sports media professionals into Sports@CJC Ring of Honor

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) has announced the inductees into the 2026 Sports@CJC Ring of Honor, which recognizes UF alumni, faculty and staff who have made outstanding contributions to sports journalism, media and communications and positively represent the values and impact of the College and its sports program.

This year’s inductees include Jennifer Adams, B.S. Telecommunication 1997, Jeff Darlington, B.S. Journalism 2004, Elfi Schlegel, B.S. Telecommunication 1986, and former UFCJC graduate student and adjunct faculty member David Stirt.

The four inductees will be honored during the College’s Sports@CJC Sports Collective Symposium on March 4, 2026, an event featuring UFCJC alumni designed to inspire and inform students, emerging professionals and the Gator community about the future of the sports media and communication industry.

Jennifer Adams
Jennifer Adams

Jennifer Adams, vice president of CNN Sports in Atlanta, has held senior editorial and leadership roles across both news and sports for over 28-years helping shape coverage of major international events including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, and the FIFA World Cup. Prior to leading CNN Sports, Adams served as an executive producer for CNN and HLN, overseeing coverage of breaking news, presidential elections, historic cultural moments, global conflicts, and natural disasters. She has served on the UFAA Board of Directors and currently serves on the UFCJC Dean’s Leadership Council.

Jeff Darlington
Jeff Darlington

Jeff Darlington is an Emmy Award–winning reporter for ESPN and one of the network’s most visible storytellers across its biggest events. Best known for his work covering the NFL, he serves as ESPN’s reporter for major tentpole events including the Super Bowl, The Masters, the PGA Championship, and Wimbledon, delivering in-depth reporting, compelling storytelling, and exclusive interviews.  He joined ESPN in 2016 and is a regular contributor to programs such as SportsCenter, NFL Live, and Get Up, and is widely respected for his access, relationships, and ability to capture the human side of elite athletes and coaches.

Elfi Schlegel

Elfi Schlegel is one of the most distinguished figures in collegiate gymnastics and sports broadcasting, celebrated for her elite athletic achievements, extensive commentary career, and enduring impact on the sport. She competed on the Florida Gators women’s gymnastics team from 1982 to 1986 and was a six-time All-American and a four-time Southeastern Conference champion — excelling in the all-around, balance beam, and vault — helping the Gators to consistent NCAA national championship appearances. Schlegel became a prominent sports commentator, bringing technical insight and charismatic delivery to gymnastics coverage. She served as an analyst for major networks including CTV, CBC, and notably NBC, where she covered gymnastics at multiple Olympic Games from 1992 through 2012 — becoming one of the most recognizable voices in Olympic sports broadcasting.

David Stirt
David Stirt

David Stirt, UFCJC graduate student and adjunct faculty member, was the founding publisher of Gator Bait newspaper (1980-98) and Fightin’ Gators magazine (2003-13). He developed and taught UFCJC’s first sports reporting class (1980-1990), hosted Sportalk, Gainesville’s first weeknight radio sports talk show (1980-84), and produced/hosted 5-Live Sports on WUFT-TV (1982-88). He was also a founding member and president of the College Sports Publishers Association (1994-2003). In 2004 he wrote the book Saturdays At The Swamp: An inside Look at the Pageantry Tradition and Spirit of Game Day at the University of Florida.
