Maria Fernanda Camacho shares information on recent CCN Spanish Language Reporting Seminar
Maria Fernanda Camacho, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Assistant in the Innovation News Center and Summer Media Institute director, recently attended the Spanish Language Reporting Seminar from the Center for Community News (CCN) at Florida International University (FIU).

Camacho, a member of the 2026 CCN Faculty Champions cohort, connected with professionals from different schools including Texas Tech University, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Arizona, California State University, University of Michigan and Columbia College. FIU school leaders and representatives from the MacArthur Foundation and Knight Foundation also participated in discussions about programs, partnerships and fostering relationships.
Part of the CCN Spanish Language Reporting Initiative, the event focused on a variety of ideas and partnerships including “news deserts” that Spanish Language programs can encounter. Other topics focused on fostering media outlet revenues and creating sustainability between programs.
Next steps for the program include building a platform for student work, especially stories related to immigration and artificial intelligence (AI), to be published in different media outlets across the country.
In addition, Camacho will participate in a Broadcast Education Association (BEA) panel at its annual conference in April. The panel discussion, “Student Reporting and Community News,” will also include Richard Watts, Director of the Center for Community News at the University of Vermont, Rick Brunson from the Nicholson School of Communication and Media at University of Central Florida and University of Alabama News Center Associate Professor Chandra Clark.
