UFCJC alumna and Journalism student recognized in 2025-26 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia Narrative Storytelling competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) alumna Ashleigh Lucas, B.S. Journalism 2025, and Journalism senior Nicole Borman placed third and ninth, respectively, in the 2025-2026 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia Narrative Storytelling competition. There were 97 entries from 57 schools submitted in the first multimedia competition of the academic year.
Lucas’ entry, “The Threads that Bind: Group Makes Quilts to Honor Alachua County Lynching Victims” features a group of quilters that stitch together the painful stories left untold. Borman’s entry, “When Math Meets Medicine: How a Mathematician Turned Grief into a Mission” features Helen Moore’s lifetime quest to use math models to help find a cure for cancer and improve drug treatments to control the disease.
Currently, UF is in third place in the Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition based on accumulated student points in the first of four multimedia competitions.
The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 66th year, includes four writing, two photojournalism, two broadcast, two audio and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. Currently, there are 105 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs who are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
