UFCJC Wins 2021-2022 Hearst Journalism Awards Intercollegiate Writing Competition

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) has won the 2021-2022 Hearst Journalism Awards Intercollegiate Writing competition with the highest accumulated student points from the five writing competitions held during the academic year. This is the first time UFCJC has won the Intercollegiate Writing Competition since 1984.

Students and alumni who propelled UFCJC to victory include:

  • Investigative Reporting: First-place for Journalism senior Elise Elder and third place for Houston Harwood, B.S. Journalism 2022.
  • Personality/Profile Writing Competition: Second and fourth place, respectively, for Ava Loomar, B.S. Journalism 2021, and Natalia Galicza, B.S. Journalism 2022.
  • Sports Writing Competition: Third-place for Zachary Huber, B.S. Journalism 2021, and 19th place for Journalism junior Payton Titus.
  • Feature Writing Competition: 12th-place tie for Journalism senior Sarah Breske and Thomas Weber, B.S. Journalism 2021.
  • Explanatory Writing Competition: Thirteenth place tie for Marlow Starling, B.S. Journalism 2022.

UFCJC received the top honor followed by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Syracuse University, Arizona State University, Pennsylvania State University, Temple University, Indiana University, Stony Brook University, University of Montana, and the University of Missouri.

The top three intercollegiate winners earn $10,000, $4,000 and $2,000, respectively. These awards will be presented at the Intercollegiate Awards presentation at the National Championships in San Francisco at the end of May.

The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 62nd year, also includes two photojournalism, one audio, two television, and four multimedia competitions. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends annually. There are 103 universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs that are eligible to participate in the Hearst monthly competitions.
