Harrison Hove Comments on Enforcement of Broadcast Employment Contracts

Harrison Hove, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications multimedia news manager, was quoted in “Broadcast Giant, Sinclair, Sues Two Former WPEC-Channel 12 Reporters,” published in the Palm Beach Post on April 17

The article focuses on Sinclair Communications’ decision to sue two former employees for breach of contract after they experienced “consistent right-wing bias” at the station. The lawsuits surfaced as the company is being scrutinized for forcing anchors across the country to read the same message about the dangers of “fake news.”

Hove has signed employment contracts during his career and asserts that stiff penalties are part of the TV news culture, but are rarely enforced. He believes that Sinclair may be sending a message to others who are thinking of leaving.

“It’s a black eye for an ownership group,” he said. “If it’s not right for you and you don’t want to work there, you’re probably not doing a very good job. Why would they want to hold you to it?”
