CJC Innovation News Center Podcasts Share Experts’ Insights on Broadcast News

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Innovation News Center has launched a new weekly podcast exploring issues facing the local television news industry. Broadcast Bits: A Time of Change in TV News is hosted by CJC News Manager Harrison Hove.

Each podcast will include multiple perspectives and guests will range from newsroom managers to corporate executives to academic researchers. The weekly 10 to 20-minute episodes will be published Wednesdays at 6 a.m. ET on wuft.org.

In the first episode, published on Aug. 23, Hove and guest Jeff Lyle, managing partner of Independent News Network (INN) parent Media Gateway, explored inevitable changes in the broadcast news industry. INN, based in Little Rock, Ark., produces newscasts for various television stations across the country. While this model reduces costs, critics argue it decreases localism in communities.

Upcoming episodes include:

  • Aug. 30: Social Media Missteps (Guests: Scott Jones, FTVLive.com; Kim Wilson, Social News Desk)
  • Sept. 6: Grab Your Mojo (Guest: Mike Castellucci, former reporter and current professor-of-practice at Michigan State University).
  • Sept. 13: Experimentation Central (Guests: Mike Canan, WCPO.com editor-in-chief; Jeremy Campbell, executive storyteller, WXIA)
  • Sept. 20: Big Business Fuels Consolidation (Guest: Dr. Danilo Yanich, University of Delaware)
