Drea Cornejo Receives National Press Photographers Foundation Scholarship

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications senior Drea Cornejo was awarded the 2017 Jimi Lott Scholarship from the National Press Photographers Foundation (NAPF). Cornejo, one of only eight student honorees, will receive a $2,000 award.

Jimi Lott was a Seattle Times staff photographer for more than 20 years. His work focused on the less fortunate in the Seattle community, including the homeless and those with mental illness. He died in 2005 at age 52

Gainesville Sun Photo Director and CJC Photojournalism adjunct instructor Rob Witzel, B.S. Journalism 2003, sent a letter of support on her behalf. She works full time in the photo department of the newspaper. In addition, Cornejo recently placed sixth in the 2016 Hearst Journalism Awards Picture Story category. She will now advance to the national semi-final competition.

The NAPF is charged with advancing photojournalism through education and awarding scholarships and fellowships to deserving individuals who have demonstrated ability or promise in the field of visual journalism.
