Kim Walsh-Childers, professor in the Department of Journalism, and Tim Sorel, professor in the Department of Telecommunication at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, have won Faculty Summer Awards.

Walsh-Childers has been awarded a Faculty Research Summer Award. She will spend the summer conducting research for a grant through the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program, which seeks applications to “conquer the problems of over diagnosis and over treatment” of breast cancer.

Sorel has been awarded a Faculty Professional Summer Award. He will spend the summer with Silk Media Creative, a production company in New York. He will take on the role of assistant editor and colorist for several series that will air Comedy Central, VH1 and other television series.

The Research Program is designed to provide full-time faculty an opportunity to conduct original communication research, engage in creative activities and to pursue sponsored funding. The Professional Program provides full-time faculty an opportunity for a high-quality, state-of-the-art professional experience in an industrial setting and in a geographic location outside the faculty member’s normal work environment.

Both awards were reinstated this year in collaboration with the Dean’s Office and Faculty Senate.
