Adding glitz to the “Angel of Ahlem” site

I didn’t design the “Angel of Ahlem” Web site for The Documentary Institute, but I did give them assist with some added functionality after the fact.

I should probably go back and convert the photo gallery to LightWindow.

It looks too much like August, just rearranged a little. Yes, I should post more often.

Dreamweaver tip: Import and Export site definitions

My computer was upgraded to Windows Vista last week and my Adobe Creative Suite was upgraded to version 3. That’s a long story.

When I used to get a new computer or some sort of upgrade, I would transfer my Dreamweaver site definitions using a utility called MM-Exporter. That didn’t work this time, however. I don’t know why.

I ended up using a different method, the “Export…” and “Import…” buttons in the “Manage Sites” dialog in Dreamweaver. I opened Dreamweaver 8 on a second machine in my office (that I had luckily transferred my site definitions into) and exported the site definitions to a network drive. Then I opened Dreamweaver CS3 on my main workstation and imported away. That was certainly easier than re-creating more than a dozen site definitions by hand.

Textpattern Solutions

Textpattern SolutionsI received of a copy of the book Textpattern Solutions this week (Thanks, Pete). The timing is good because I’m working on some enhancements to a site and there are a lot of good ideas in it.

One problem I have run into is in the Multiauthor Weblog example. The example makes use of the kgr_safe_excerpt plugin, which seems to now be defunct and superceded by the Beginning plugin. Update: The rss_auto_excerpt plugin is recommended by the author as a replacement for kgr_safe_excerpt. I’ve looked it over and will use it.

I’ll probably blog more comments as I run across things to say. I’ll take it home to read this weekend because it relates to an active project, but that’s not a guarantee that any reading will get done.

Spring communigator is “glossy complete”

All stories from the glossy pages of the Spring 2007 communigator are now published online. A couple of non-glossy stories and tweaking the table of contents (and probably also some CSS issues) are all that remain.

Looks a lot like June’s list. I really should post here more frequently than once a month. My excuse this month is that two weeks of it were occupied by a vacation, prep for it and the aftermath.

New Flash video Webcasts posted

I posted seven new Webcasts of sessions from the UF Institute on Journalism and Media yesterday. There are several notable differences from prior Webcasts.

  • They were not originally presented live. They were recorded live into iMovie and exported as flv files (which is unbelievably slow even on screaming fast hardware).
  • Since the panels were two hours long, the video was cut into sections and each section was posted as an individual Webcast.
  • The videos are delivered in Flash format instead of QuickTime streaming. The player is Jeroen Wijering’s very reliable Flash Video Player that I’ve used before.

One of the easiest parts of the project was adding support for an additional video type to the Textpattern instance that runs College News and Webcasts. That literally took all of about 15 minutes and was certainly made easier by the facts that it looks a lot like the QuickTime implementation and I have prior experience working with the player.

My favorite presentation was that of Chet Rhodes from washingtonpost.com.
