Adding a one-column body class to a two-column UF CSS template

May 27th, 2005

After reading in And all that (CSS) Malarkey yesterday about using multiple class attributes on the body tag to create multiple page layouts within a style sheet, I thought I’d give it a try today as a good “Friday” task.
The problem that I’ve had up to this point has been that most of the [...]

Spring 2005 communigator complete

May 25th, 2005

The Spring 2005 online edition of communigator is complete. It must be record time since I’ve only had the files in hand for about two weeks and the first stories just went up last week. Code familiarity must breed speed and productivity.

Adding UF template elements to a WordPress template

May 24th, 2005

Dissatisfied with my earlier attempt at making this blog look like it’s UF-templated and have it look and work “right” like a blog, I started over and like the new result a lot better.
In the old template, I had tried to merge WordPress code into the UF template. In this attempt, I have left much [...]

Scooped on color

May 20th, 2005

I was going to write a piece on my favorite online color pickers because I found a new one that I like. However, I got scooped by this guy.
I first ran across color palette creator, my new friend, in a blog entry by Malarkey, who wrote an earlier article describing the technique.
My old favorite [...]

Mindy acknowledges me in print

May 19th, 2005

Dave’s copy of Mindy’s new book arrived today. He loaned it to me and of course I went straight to the acknowledgments to what nice things she said about me.

New communigator starts going up

May 17th, 2005

The Spring 2005 issue of communigator hit the street a couple of weeks ago. The files hit my desk last week and the first stories hit the Web this afternoon.
I have spoken with the Editor and we are going to attempt to do the next issue concurrently so it can be ready to go [...]

Formatting lists, ugh!

May 16th, 2005

Nothing seems to cause me to want to pull my hair out more than formatting lists. These seem to be the canonical online references:

Taming Lists by Mark Newhouse (from A List Apart)
Consistent List Indentation by Eric Meyer (from devedge)

Design (or coding) notes for Orange & Blue

May 11th, 2005

The slide show effect on the Orange & Blue front page uses the Fade Images JavaScript technique. The images do a fade transition in IE, but just flip in Firefox. It will probably eventually be replaced this Summer by a Flash movie that accomplishes the same thing.
While researching the above, I also found this [...]

PHP for beginners

May 10th, 2005

Dan came by looking for some good material on learning PHP. Here are a couple of links:

Easy-peasy PHP (recent)
PHP from the Ground Up (oldie, but goodie)

I’m a PHP novice myself at this point, but I’ve found these informative.

Turning a UF Web template into a WordPress theme

May 10th, 2005

I turned a UF Web template into a WordPress theme by following the theme dissections at UrbanGiraffe:

Dissection of a WordPress theme: Part 1
Dissection of a WordPress theme: Part 2
Dissection of a WordPress theme: Part 3

It still needs more tweaking, but it’s great for starters.
