Florida is a big state that harbors many different educational systems. United through SJI this summer, students had the chance to realize the differences between their schools, including lockers, food, campus, teachers and security.
The disparities between schools even influenced details as minor as what book bags students need.
"There aren't any lockers, so we have to carry all of our books to every class," said junior Janet Rodriguez from Miami Senior High School in Miami.
Another subject pertaining to a student's education that was discussed was the cafeteria food. Many complained that the food from the school cafeteria was disgusting, so to redeem themselves the school had outside food delivered.
"You have your options. Either you can eat the cafeteria food, bring your own food or eat the fast food the school has delivered," said Nicole Ben-Moshe from Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in North Miami.
There are others who feel that the food is great. Becky Sprague from Astronaut High School in Titusville said, "The food in my school is good. They have a variety of things to choose from that is provided by the school."
As far as where students are allowed to eat lunch, one similarity popped up. Most students in Florida said that they are not allowed to leave campus for any reason.
Teachers, of course, were also a hot topic, for good and bad. While most students claimed to like their teachers, Mary Schmitt from Key West High School in Key West said, "We have really bad teachers, as in teachers straight out of college with no experience."
However, the topic that had the most controversy was security within school grounds. Everyone had something different to say on the way the security system runs in his or her school. Some schools have 50 cameras while others only have two. There are security guards located on some
school grounds, and there are other schools that are opened to theTo top public, as Chloe Holdren from Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce said, "There aren't any security guards at my school."
Even though these schools may all be located in the same the state, the rules they play by are far apart.
