2009 Research Opportunity Incentive Seed Fund

The Fund provides funding for new, faculty-initiated research programs that are multi-/interdisciplinary and that have the expectation and a reasonable plan for becoming externally-funded programs at the University of Florida. The awards are designed to support new projects and/or new collaborative partnerships. Some important aspects of the Seed Fund are:

  1. The total budget should not exceed $100,000.  The fund may be administered over a two-year period.
  2. The proposal must be multi-/interdisciplinary and must involve faculty from at least two departments/units/colleges. Single-investigator proposals are not eligible.
  3. The proposal must be submitted by faculty member(s) (PI) eligible to submit a proposal to an external funding agency.
  4. The College of Journalism and Communications is allotted to forward one proposal to the Office of Research. This means that our college will first select our best proposal through an internal screening process (i.e., the proposals will first be evaluated by the Research Committee). Note that while our college can forward only one proposal, there is no restriction on the number of proposals submitted by colleges with faculty serving as co-PIs.
  5. All final proposals submitted to the Office of Research will undergo a uniform central scientific review by faculty panels.
  6. The deadline for proposal submission to the college is January 2, while the deadline for final submission to the Office of Research is January 12, 2008.

Please use the full proposal guidelines from the Office of Research to prepare your proposal to the college’s Research Committee (you do not need to use the DSR-1 form as the cover page at this time). Again, the college deadline for the Seed Fund is January 2. The full proposal (following the proposal guidelines provided) should be e-mailed to Sylvia Chan-Olmsted by 5 p.m. on January 2, 2008 so that the Research Committee might meet quickly to select the proposal for the college and, if needed, assist the PI(s) in improving the proposal for campus wide competition.

Faculty Summer Research/Creative Activity Awards and the New Grant Development Awards

The College will be able to offer a total of four summer research/creative activity awards in the summer of 2008, including three awards typically reserved for the new assistant professors who just joined us this fall (assuming that they submit a satisfactory application to the Research Committee). This means that there will be one open award available for the rest of the faculty. In addition, the College will offer one summer grant development award in 2008. Please note that the submission deadline for both awards is January 28, 2008 at noon. The Research Committee will recommend the award recipients to Dean Wright for the summer appointment.
