Congratulations to the following College Seed Money fund recipients!

For this fiscal year (2006-2007), the Division of Graduate Studies and Research received a total of 10 applications requesting a combined amount of $36,985 for its Seed money fund. The College allocated a total of $15,500 to the following applicants based on the recommendations of the Research Committee.

James Babanikos

Project to produce a 30-minute television family drama in conjunction with WUFT-TV on whether or not Santa Claus exists.

Award: $1,600

Linda Correll

Projects in “Creative Aerobics” and fees to enter national and international advertising competitions: the 2007 New York Festivals Awards, the American Advertising Federation’s 2007 ADDY Awards, The 2006 Summit Creative Awards, Communication Arts Advertising Annual, the 2006 HOW Competition and Creativity 36.

Award: $1,500

Lynda Lee Kaid, Janis Page, and Spiro Kiousis

Project to establish a Digital Political Media Resource Repository for the College of Journalism and Communications. 

The project coordinators would collect, store, organize, and make available in digital form various media materials for use by faculty and students in the College.  They propose to collect (1) print, broadcast, and Web news samples, (2) political advertising in print, broadcast, and Web formats, (3) online media materials such as Web sites, news releases, and other promotional materials, and (4) other relevant digital media related to the 2006 elections in order to set up a prototype resource center to be used as a model for the future development of the Digital Political Media Resource Repository

Project on indigenous cultures in danger of extinction due to the rapid industrialization and globalization of world culture.

Michael Leslie

Project to gather baseline data on the representation of Afro-descendants in the primetime news programs of the following Caribbean countries: Haiti, Cuba, and Jamaica.

Award: $1,200

Belio Martinez

Project to identify the key healthcare coverage issue frames employed by Hispanic media outlets in the state of Florida during the 2004 U.S. presidential election.

Award: $700

Juan Carlos Molleda and Belio Martinez

Project to understand and describe the factors impacting the formation, maintenance and development, as well as potential dissolution of alliances and partnerships for social change.

The study will focus on the partnership formed by 10 municipalities in the southern region of Department (State) of Antioquia in Colombia for its context.

Cynthia Morton, Debbie Treise, and Hyojin Kim

A two-part project to investigate advertising directed at the “mature market” audience. 

The first part of the project will implement a content analysis of magazine advertisements aimed at mature market audiences in order to examine how advertisers can influence the group’s attitudes and opinions about mature market health and wellness. The second component of the study will be qualitative research. Focus groups or individual interviews of individuals in the mature market will be conducted to further explore attitudes about mature market advertising, as well as to investigate issues and concerns about sexually transmitted diseases and their sexual health risks.

Tim Wilkerson

Archival footage/post production for the project, “The Oracles of Pennsylvania Avenue,” an hour long documentary which follows a twenty-five year old anti-nuclear vigil in front of the White House.

Award: $1,600

Yuan Zhang

Project to conduct content analysis of 584 Chinese television commercials to examine the impact of global and local cultures on the use of advertising appeals and styles as well as the moderating role of product categories in culture-specific use of advertising appeals and styles.

Award: $2,000
