Behind Enemy Lines: Noles in Gator Country

Garnet and gold. No two other colors have quite the stomach-turning effect on most UF students. But for some, orange and blue have the same effect.

"I notice orange and blue all over this town. I think it's repulsive," UF international relations graduate student Ali Stevens says.

When the Gator football team faces this detested rival, UF music education senior Stefani Malone also roots for the Noles.

"I get made fun of all the time," Stefani says. "Especially if we lose. I hear about it for weeks because most all my friends are Florida fans."

Even though both of them prefer their current academic programs at UF, they began at FSU and the allegiance to their first school never faded.

Their stashed memorabilia reveals this enthusiasm. Besides a closet filled with Nole attire, Stefani has a 2.5-foot Seminole mascot sign, complete with a neon gold headdress, which she stows at her Mom's house.

And after Ali graduates from UF, she says she will stick a FSU bumper sticker on her car.

"I have a couple of Florida shirts just because I don't wanna get beat up," Stefani admits.

So why do they attend Florida if they are Florida State fans? Stefani says that she was a Florida State fan before she started at Florida. "Just because I'm attending Florida doesn't mean I'm going to change."

Ali, on the other hand, says, "I'm growing to like the Gators."
