The California-based McClatchy Co. recently pledged $600,000 to the College of Journalism and Communications to establish the McClatchy Professorship in Freedom of Information.

McClatchy will deliver the funds in annual $200,000 increments, said Dean Terry Hynes.

“This is a very generous gift for which we are truly grateful,” she said. “It represents the confidence that the McClatchy Co. has in the College and in the work of the College’s Brechner Center for Freedom of Information.”

The College will start using the money after receiving the final installment in early 2006, Hynes noted.

The College expects the endowment to generate about $24,000 each year, $15,000 of which will support a graduate assistant. The professor can use the remainder for travel expenses, professional materials and activities related to studying, collecting and disseminating information about freedom of information laws and practices.

McClatchy owns 12 daily and 18 community newspapers, including its largest, the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The company also owns an Internet publishing company, Nando Media.
