BERLIN JOURNALISM STUDY-ABROAD MAY 2015
PARTICIPANTS

CHLOE STRADINGER -- Hey friends! I'm a sophomore journalism major from Kansas City. I love to explore, eat and socialize. I can't wait to do all this and learn about photography (sans Instagram filters) in Berlin!

REBEKKAH MAR -- Hi, I'm Becky Mar. I'm from Miami and I'm currently a University of Florida sophomore majoring in telecommunications with a specialization in news producing. At first glance, I probably do not look German, but my grandmother was born and raised in Germany making me three quarters Chinese and one quarter German. After hearing her stories and learning about her culture, I honestly cannot wait to go to Berlin and bring back amazing stories. In my free time, I love to write, eat, and obsess over movies from the 80's.

GIUSEPPE SABELLA – Hey there. My name is Giuseppe Sabella, but most people find it easier to call me Joe. I'm a 21-year-old journalism student. My father went to UF and I was born in Gainesville, although I lived most of my life four hours away in Cape Coral. I've come full circle - right back to the Swamp. I was passionate about photography ever since I picked up a camera when I was 12. I haven't been as involved the last couple years and I'm ready to unearth that passion in Berlin. See you all soon!

SAVANNAH BECK -- My name is Savannah. I'm a French/International Studies dual major with a minor in German. I spent a year abroad in Essen, Germany and can't wait to get back to Europe!

BRIANA ERICKSON -- Hi! I'm Briana, I'm a sophomore journalism major at UF. I was born and raised in South FL and this trip will be my first experience in Europe. I'm excited for all the story potential there will be! I think this will be a great hands-on and cultural exchange :) I am also interesting in traveling a little after the trip and seeing what other stories lie in the surrounding countries around Germany. Let me know if you are interested in accompanying me and I cannot wait to meet the group!

CRYSTAL BAILEY -- Hey, I’m Crystal! I’m a Telecom-News major in my 2nd year at UF and I’m originally from Port Saint Lucie, Florida. I saw the World Cup games in the Public Viewing at the Alten Eisstadion. Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. Meine Nebenfach ist Deutsch. Wir sind Weltmeister!!! It will be great to meet all of you and travel with you to Germany.

CATIE FLATLEY -- I'm a junior majoring in journalism. I just transferred to UF this semester, and I am happy to be a part of the Gator Nation. I have a rare fortune that enables me to travel frequently around the world with my father, a pilot, but I have not yet experienced Berlin. I'm excited to get to know the city and each of you on this trip.

KRISTIN LETSCH -- I'm a second-year mass comm master's student who will graduate in August. I received my B.A. in English Literature from Binghamton University in N.Y., where I'm from. Both sides of my family are German and I know a little bit of the language so I'm super excited to go to Berlin. I studied abroad in London, have been to Europe several times and want to see the world — serious case of wanderlust. A few of my favorite things: cats, chocolate and commas. I'm looking forward to learning more about photography and meeting you. Bis dann!

ANSLEY PENTZ -- I love to discover people's stories, and journalism was the best outlet for me to connect with others. I am currently a sophomore. I've never been abroad, and I am very excited to experience a new country with other students. When I'm not reporting, I'm eating at local restaurants, reading opinion pieces and applying lipstick.

ANDREW STANFILL -- I'll be the teaching assistant for the course. I'm currently an assistant photo editor for the New York Times News Service, a wire service for the Times run out of Gainesville. My freelance work has been published in Education Week, the Tampa Bay Times and the Miami Herald among other publications. I went on the 2008 Berlin trip as an undergraduate, was the T.A. in 2013 and I'm am looking forward to seeing Berlin again.

JOHN FREEMAN -- I'm the professor taking the group to Berlin. This photo is from my first experience living in Germany, when I was in the second, third and fourth grades in Rodenbach, near Ramstein Air Force Base. (I've grown some since then.) My father was later assigned to Berlin, where I graduated from high school.  I'm a real sucker for nostalgia, and look forward to returning to this fascinating city for my 11th study-abroad trip. My family thinks that red hat belonged to my twin sister, but no one remembers why I'm wearing it.
