SPJ names UF chapter best in nation

(September 18, 2002) The Society of Professional Journalists named the University of Florida chapter its most outstanding campus chapter for 2001 at its national convention last week in Ft. Worth, Texas.

SPJ President Al Cross said the UF chapter was the best among more than 120 campus chapters chartered to colleges and universities around the nation.

The chapter was cited especially for organizing programs bringing the public and journalists together to discuss issues, and its advocacy for freedom of information. Cross mentioned panel discussions the chapter held on the coverage of the military in time of war and on victim's rights. He also congratulated the chapter on a freedom of information audit it organized at the University of Florida, a newsletter called "J-School Personalities" and its Web site.

The chapter has grown to 36 members. Its presidents during the term for which the award was given were Julie Lyons and Kate Palmer. David Carlson is the faculty adviser.
