Science/Health Communications program gets funding boost
(July 13, 2004) The University of Florida’s science/health communications program is getting a $150,000 boost.
The president of Jacksonville-based Scott-McRae Group and his wife recently pledged $100,000 to the UF College of Journalism and Communication toward the program, and the state is expected to match $50,000.
Henry H. “Tip” Graham Jr. and his wife, Diane McRae Graham, set up the endowment to support the college faculty’s professional and educational activities.
“This gift will help us better prepare people to communicate about the vital topics of science and health,” said Dean Terry Hynes.
The Henry and Eugenia Graham Professional Development Fund for Science/Health Communications is eligible for a 50 percent installment from the state Major Gifts Matching Trust Fund.
“The College seeks to establish a nationally recognized Center for Excellence in Science/Health Communication,” said Rebecca Hoover, director of development for the college. “The Graham fund will be an important component of the college’s strategic plan to build such a center.”
Tip’s father, Henry Graham Sr., was a longtime physician in the Gainesville community. His mother, Eugenia Graham, opened the nation’s second blood bank in St. Louis, Mo.
The college is a national leader in the professional education of future journalists and other communications practitioners. It is nationally accredited and has programs in advertising, print and broadcast journalism, public relations, and telecommunication production and operations.
