Peru photography exhibit opening

Students of the Universidad Nacional San Cristóbal de Humanga play authentic Peruvian music in the streets of Ayacucho. Photo by Andrea Blum(December 4, 2002) “Peru in Words and Pictures,” an exhibit featuring the photography and writing of University of Florida international journalism students, will open with a reception Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the J. Wayne Reitz Union from 7 to 9 p.m.

The students’ work also will be included in the Dec. 10 debut of the third edition of the online magazine, www.internationaljournalism.com. This year’s edition will feature full-length articles and photo essays, as well as interactive audio.

In October, the group worked in the field for more than a week in the provincial capital of Ayacucho in the Andean highlands. The 13 graduate and undergraduate students are part of an international journalism program, nicknamed the Florida FlyIns, taught by John Kaplan. “Our students have put together a tremendous body of work this year. The exhibition features an evocative selection of photography and writing that really brings out the spirit of the Peruvian people,” Kaplan said.

Earlier editions of the online magazine caught the attention of the international aid agency, CARE, or Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere, and for the first time the class has collaborated with a humanitarian assistance program.

The exhibition will be free and open to the public until Friday, January 10, 2003.
