(October 12, 2004) Kathleen S. Kelly, professor and chair of the Department of Public Relations, has been named the 2004 Outstanding Educator by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

The national award recognizes excellence in public relations teaching based on contemporary, research-based knowledge of public relations and contributions to the advancement of public relations education. Kelly is the first UF professor to win the award.

Kelly is an internationally recognized authority on public relations and fund raising. She is the author of two award-winning books and more than 50 articles, book chapters, monographs, and refereed papers. Her research contributions have been honored with the most prestigious awards in public relations and fund raising, including the 1999 Jackson Jackson & Wagner Behavioral Science Prize from the PRSA Foundation, the 1998 Staley/Robeson/Ryan/St. Lawrence Prize for Research from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the 1995 Pathfinder Award from the Institute for Public Relations.

Kelly joined UF’s College of Journalism and Communications in July 2003, to head its Department of Public Relations. With 11 tenure-track faculty, the department is the largest public relations education program in the United States and consistently is ranked among the top three in quality.

Kelly will receive her outstanding educator award at the 2004 PRSA International Conference in New York City in late October. In a special salute to UF, the award will be presented to her by the 2004 President and CEO of PRSA, Del Galloway, who earned both his bachelor and master’s degrees in public relations at the University of Florida. Approximately 50 student members of UF’s Alpha Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America plan to attend the ceremony.

The Public Relations Society of America, based in New York City, is the world's largest organization for public relations professionals. The Society has nearly 28,000 professional and student members. PRSA is organized into 116 chapters nationwide. The North Florida Chapter, based in Jacksonville, is Kelly’s home chapter.
