Jul02 College expands National Public Radio, local news programming on WUFT-FM

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, through its new Division of Multimedia Properties, will expand National Public Radio programming on WUFT-FM and its affiliate station, WJUF-FM, beginning Aug. 3.

The change is part of an overall commitment to expanded national and local news and public affairs coverage to better serve the needs and interests of the North Central Florida area. It will also allow the college to better meet its educational mission by providing improved digital and multimedia training to its students, aligning it with current trends in journalism education.

Jun18 College hosts U.S. State Department-funded global media education institute

Seven years ago, the Armenian government banned the popular TV station A1+. Starting June 30, a former A1+ reporter will spend six weeks gaining experience in emerging digital fields at the U.S. Department of State-funded Study of the U.S. Institute on Journalism and Media hosted by the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications.

Jun10 Sun Sports partners with UF students to make TV commercials

Sun Sports’ new campaign for “Breakfast with the Gators,” set to launch in August, is not only made for Gators. It’s also made by Gators.

After months of brainstorming, eight University of Florida advertising students recently saw their ideas come to life on the set of a television commercial they created for Sun Sports’ “Breakfast with the Gators” program. Creatively titled “Feed Your Growl,” the multi-media campaign will promote the network’s Sunday morning programming, which is devoted exclusively to Gator sports year-round and includes network-produced replays of Gator football games each fall.

Jun05 College embarks on plan to reorganize public and commercial broadcasting stations

The University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, in collaboration with station personnel and outside media entities and professionals, is creating a plan that will position the stations to be leaders in electronic and digital media communications in the 21st Century. The plan also will provide more relevant service to the Gainesville/Ocala community and enhance collaboration with the educational mission of the College and the University of Florida.

The plan centers around the creation of a new Division of Multimedia Properties and will focus on the collaboration of all public and commercial media units including WUFT-TV/DT, WUFT/WJUF-FM, WLUF-LP and WRUF-AM/FM; academic departments and graduate programs; divisions and Institutes; web sites; as well as the forthcoming new Center for Media Innovation and Research.

May22 WUFT-TV News wins two national SPJ Mark of Excellence awards

Manned mostly by students, the University of Florida’s Public Broadcasting Service station recently won two national Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards.

WUFT, which is part of UF’s College of Journalism and Communications, earned SPJ’s coveted Television Newscast award. Two of its students, junior Miles Doran and senior Patrick Fleming, won the Television Breaking News Reporting award for their coverage of Tropical Storm Fay.

May18 State Dept. awards College $290,000 to fund institute

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs awarded a $290,000 grant to UF’s College of Journalism and Communications to fund the six-week Study of the United States Institute on Journalism and Media, a program that gives interactive experience to foreign journalism educators in emerging digital fields.

May04 Construction begins on 21st Century Newsroom

Dean John Wright and Prof. David Carlson, executive director of the Center for Media Innovation and Research (CMIR), swung the ceremonial sledgehammers on April 2 to mark the beginning of construction of the “21st Century Newsroom” on the ground floor of Weimer Hall.

Apr28 WUFT-TV student journalists win 15 Florida AP awards

The Florida Associated Press Broadcasters contest recently named 15 WUFT-TV pieces as winners, including all six entries submitted to the Pro TV contest. Students beat out WMBB, WCTV and WJHG.
