May13— College creates first endowed chair in public interest communications
The University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications today announced the nation’s first endowed chair in public relations with a focus on public interest communications, a field of research and practice focused on tools and strategies to advance organizations’ missions and goals in the nonprofit and public sectors.
May09— ABC News to open mini-bureau in College
ABC News will open a mini-bureau in the College in September.
UF is among five U.S. universities chosen for the ABC News On Campus program. Students will work as staffers in each of the bureaus, contributing story ideas and using equipment provided by ABC. The program will allow ABC to expand its news-gathering resources while training future journalists.
May07— Hussin wins Hearst multimedia competition
Photojournalism students Tim Hussin and Jeremiah Stanley placed first and 12th, respectively, in the inaugural Hearst Foundation intercollegiate multimedia competition, professor John Freeman announced.
May01— UF student journalists win SPJ, RTNDA regional awards
University of Florida student journalists have won eight Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) and ten regional Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Apr23— Kaplan is named Fulbright Scholar
Prof. John Kaplan (Journalism), has been named a Fulbright Scholar for 2009 by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB), Dean John Wright announced today.
Apr10— Walsh-Childers selected as UF Research Foundation Professor
Prof. Kim Walsh-Childers (Journalism) has been selected to receive a University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship award for 2008-09, Dean John Wright announced today.
Apr10— Florida FlyIns online magazine is published
The latest edition of the Florida FlyIns online magazine has now been published, Professor John Kaplan announced. Thirteen graduate and undergraduate students took part in the program that traveled to Andros Island, Bahamas during the Fall 2007 semester, the eighth annual journey abroad.
Apr07— UF 4th nationally in Hearst photojournalism competition
Photojournalism student Jarrett Baker placed sixth in round three, picture story/series, of the annual Hearst Foundation Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition, helping UF earn fourth place nationally overall, professor John Kaplan announced.
Mar27— College to recognize five Alumni of Distinction
The College will recognize five alumni this spring as “Alumni of Distinction,” Dean John Wright announced. Including these five, the College will have recognized only 102 of its more than 22,000 graduates in this manner.
The alumni have been invited to participate in the College’s annual awards banquet on Wednesday, April 9 and the undergraduate commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 4.
Mar19— Documentary Institute alumni take College Emmy
Two graduates of the College’s Documentary Institute recently won an Emmy at the 29th annual College Television Awards in Los Angeles for their thesis project, “Bismillah: In the Name of Allah.”
Jolene Pinder, MAMC 2007, and Sarah Zaman, MAMC 2007, won the documentary category for their film about a Muslim Girl Scouts leader who runs for office in Minneapolis.
