Foley joins Journalism faculty
(May 29, 2003) -- Mike Foley has accepted an offer to join the faculty in Journalism full-time, beginning in August, Dean Terry Hynes announced today. Foley has been hired into the college's first "career-instructional" faculty position, an assignment that heavily emphasizes teaching and service and is not tenure-accruing.
Foley had a distinguished record as a journalist before returning to UF to earn the master's degree. He spent most of his professional career at the St. Petersburg Times, which he joined in 1974 and where he served in numerous capacities, including executive and managing editor (1984-92), vice president of communications and community relations (1992-96) and vice president, corporate affairs/spokesman (1996-99).
Foley is a former Pulitzer Prize juror and past president of the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors and Freedom of Information Foundation of Florida. He also has served on the Department of Journalism's Advisory Council. Foley is currently completing his master's degree in the college. He earned the bachelor's degree in journalism from UF in 1970 and was recognized as an alumnus of distinction by the college in 1994.
