UF Journalism Exhibit on Brazil to Open at Reitz Union

(November 30, 2003) "Brazil in Words, Pictures, and Sound" an exhibit featuring the work of University of Florida international journalism students, will open from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 9 at the J. Wayne Reitz Union.

The exhibit will include photographs, written excerpts, and audio from an October trip to southern Brazil by a group of international journalism students nicknamed the Florida FlyIns.  The 14 students spent 10 days in Novo Hamburgo in the southeastern state of Rio Grande do Sul, about 715 miles south of São Paulo.

"This is our fourth annual exhibition following earlier trips to Costa Rica, Belize, and Peru," said John Kaplan, an associate professor in the College of Journalism and Communications who teaches the international journalism program and coordinated the trip.

"This year's student work is terrific and I think it may be our most diverse exhibition yet," said Kaplan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist.

The students' work will be later published in the January debut of the fourth edition of the program's online magazine: www.internationaljournalism.com. This year's edition will feature full-length articles and photo essays.

The practicum is sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times and is designed to bring together writers, photographers, and broadcast journalists to develop international journalism skills in Latin America.

The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be on display until Jan. 13.
