New McAdams book gives Flash to journalism
(April 13, 2005) A new book by University of Florida professor Mindy McAdams,
titled Flash Journalism: How to Create
Multimedia News Packages, was published April 7, 2005, by Focal
Press, a division of Elsevier.
The book describes and explains a relatively new format in online journalism, which is produced using Flash, a software application from Macromedia. The book includes 10 hands-on lessons intended to teach both journalism students and professional journalists how to use the software to produce stories for the Web and other media, including broadcast video and mobile phones.
Six detailed case studies show how journalists at washingtonpost.com, MSNBC.com, CBC Radio 3, Agence France-Presse, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and El País, the newspaper of record in Spain, use Flash to advance the practice of journalistic storytelling.
The publisher is marketing the book to photojournalists, graphic designers, and online journalists, as well as to journalism educators, in North America and Europe.
McAdams, a professor in the Department of Journalism, joined the UF faculty in August 1999. She teaches courses about online journalism, communication technologies, and the role of the news media in a democracy. She holds the Knight Chair for Journalism Technologies and the Democratic Process. In 2004, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant for teaching and research in Malaysia.
McAdams's only previous book was The Internet Handbook for Writers, Researchers, and Journalists (New York: Guilford, 2003), of which she was a co-author with three others.
The companion Web site for the book is flashjournalism.com.
