Chan-Olmsted, Treise appointed to Flanagan professorship
(August 23, 2004) Dr. Sylvia Chan-Olmsted, associate professor, Telecommunication, and Dr. Debbie Treise, associate dean for graduate studies/research, and professor, Advertising, have been appointed as Al and Effie Flanagan Professors in Journalism and Communications, Dean Terry Hynes announced. They are the second and third faculty, respectively, to be awarded this title.
The Flanagan term professorship is a three-year appointment. The holders of the professorship are eligible to apply for reappointment at the end of the term. This appointment recognizes a faculty member's outstanding record in teaching, research and service, especially during the past five years. The professorship provides up to $17,000 during each of the three fiscal years of the appointment to support a graduate student (stipend, tuition/fees, administrative costs) of the faculty member's choice. Support for the graduate student may be spent during the academic year or during the summer, depending on the needs of the Flanagan Professor and other factors related to hiring the graduate student. In addition, Flanagan Professors on nine-month appointments are provided with approximately $6,500 salary during Summer A for each of the three summers of the appointment. Flanagan Professors on 12-month appointments are provided with up to $6,500 each fiscal year for their professional development.
These professorship were made possible by the generous bequest of Al Flanagan, a 1941 graduate and 1980 Alumnus of Distinction of the College, who was a long-time Gannett employee and vice president of Gannett Broadcasting.
