(September 13, 2004) David Carlson, James M. Cox Jr. Foundation/The Palm Beach Post Professor in New Media Journalism and Director of the Interactive Media Laboratory, was voted president-elect of the Society of Professional Journalists on Sept. 11 during the organization's annual convention in New York City.
Carlson will be the 89th president of SPJ when he's inaugurated in October 2005 in Las Vegas. It's a one-year term. He will be the first educator to serve as president in the Society's modern era.
The Society of Professional Journalists works to improve and protect journalism. SPJ is dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, and based in Indianapolis, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press.
