(August 20, 2002) David Carlson has been appointed as the college's James M. Cox Foundation/The Palm Beach Post Professor in New Media Journalism, Dean Terry Hynes announced today.

The professorship was established to support teaching, research, and experimentation in emerging media journalism such as online and interactive journalism. It was designed, as was the Knight Chair, to help the college maintain its position on the cutting edge of new communications technologies.

Carlson's distinguished record in online journalism began with his founding of The Electronic Trib at the Albuquerque Tribune in 1990. He has been a UF faculty member in Journalism since 1993. He is a graduate of Drake University and a member of the executive committee of the Society of Professional Journalists and boards of directors of SPJ and the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.
