Belize
in words and pictures
debuts at Reitz Union
(December
4, 2001) University of Florida journalism students showcase photography
and writing from the Central American nation of Belize in an exhibit that
opened Tuesday, Dec. 4 in the J. Wayne Reitz Union. Students also unveiled
the latest edition of their international online magazine www.internationaljournalism.com
at the opening. The exhibition continues through Jan. 7.
The exhibition is free and open to the public and will feature more than 30 photographs and written excerpts from a nine-day trip to San Ignacio, Belize. Graduate and undergraduate photographers and writers documented cultural diversity in the Cayo District as well as Hurricane Iris relief efforts in rural villages along the Southern coast. The online magazine features photo essays and stories from Belize and also contains work from last year's class coverage in Costa Rica.
The course is part of an international journalism program nicknamed the Florida FlyIns, a course taught by John Kaplan, an associate professor in the College of Journalism and Communications and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. "We chose Belize for its reputation of being a friendly mix of many diverse ethnic cultures. We were greeted with incredible hospitality and once again our students have returned with stunning images and insightful reporting," said Kaplan.
The practicum is sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times and is part of
an advanced journalism course designed to bring together writers and photographers
to develop international journalism skills in Latin and Central America.
The FlyIns course is one of several programs the University of Florida
offers in international education, research and service.
