Four Named to Alumni of Distinction List

(March 27, 2001) Four individuals will be recognized as Alumni/a of Distinction of the College of Journalism and Communications at the annual awards banquet on Thursday, April 5, Dean Terry Hynes announced today. This brings to 68 the total number of alumni/ae the College has recognized in this manner.

The four are:

Donald Bacon, JM 1957. Author; former director and co-editor, Encyclopedia of the U.S. Congress; former senior editor of Nation's Business; former associate editor, senior editor and assistant managing editor of U.S. News & World Report; former staff writer for the Washington Evening Star and the Wall Street Journal; Congressional Fellow of the American Political Science Association in 1961-62.

C. B. Daniel, Jr. JM 1966. Chairman of First Union National Bank of North Central Florida; member of the Board of Regents of the Florida State University System (SUS); Chairman of the SUS Finance Committee. Past chairman of Gainesville's Council for Economic Outreach; past chairman of March of Dimes "WalkAmerica," past chairman of the Heart Association's "Heart Ball." Also works with AvMed HealthCare's corporate management team, is a member of the University of Florida Foundation Executive Committee, and is president-elect of United Way for 2001.

Steen B. Johansen, TEL, 1966. Documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on environmental health and human problems. Clients include International Red Cross, Danish Interdevelopment Agency, the World Bank, and the United Nations, among others. Has also produced 12 films on the history of Denmark for the Danish Broadcasting System. Awards include International Red Cross Film Festival Awards in 1981, 1982 and 1985 and the Gold Medal at the World Health Organization's Film Festival. Helped found the Rio Platano Foundation to protect rainforests in Central America.

Rosemarie "Dee Dee" Rolando Nye, PUR 1973. Vice president for human resources at AVAYA Communication, a Lucent Technologies spin-off company; former vice president for marketing innovation at Lucent Technologies where she led the start-up of Lucent's cable TV business unit; former vice president of intelligent devices at AT&T; former national sales and customer service vice president for the General Business Systems Unit of AT&T; former director for the chairman and president of NCR. Also participates in numerous service and civic activities/organizations.
