Brechner Center recognizes Business Review reporter
(January 10, 2005) The Brechner Center will recognize Dan Christensen, a reporter with the Miami Daily Business Review, at its annual Award Celebration Jan. 31, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., at the Thomas Center.
Christensen “exposed the problem of secrecy in the federal courts, one of the most serious yet under-reported problems affecting First Amendment rights since 9/11,” Brechner Center director Sandra Chance said. “His groundbreaking series provides a riveting look at how federal judges and prosecutors have conspired to keep newsworthy civil and criminal cases secret by wiping them off the public record.
“Christensen discovered the practice of ‘supersealing,’ where even the case numbers are kept secret, preventing anyone, including reporters, from knowing anything about the cases.”
