Who Can be an FSPA Member?
FSPA membership is
open to all middle and high school publications, broadcast programs and
online media teams in the state of Florida. FSPA also welcomes
the association of affiliates -- former advisers, college faculty
members, professional journalists, newspapers, publishing companies,
photography studios, radio and television stations, and any organization
interested in supporting and promoting scholastic journalism.
Why Should We Join FSPA?
Attend Fall workshop
District workshops in the Fall of each year offer insightful sessions in a variety of journalism
fields, as well as the chance for students to hear state and nationally
renowned keynote speakers.
FSPA publications
FSPA Today, the organization's newsletter, is published several times
a year with information on FSPA activities and issues concerning scholastic
journalism.
State convention
For many FSPA staffs, convention is the highlight of the year. Speakers
from across the state and nation hold sessions covering all aspects of
journalism, and students have the opportunity to compete in a variety
of pre-judged and on-the-spot contests.
Student scholarships
Some of Florida's top scholastic journalists are recognized at the state
convention and are eligible to receive scholarships. State winners then
go on to compete on the national level for the Journalism Education Association's
High School Student Journalist of the Year. The FSPA Foundation also provides
an opportunity for students to apply for need-based scholarships to attend
the state convention.
Adviser scholarships
Funds from the FSPA Foundation have expanded scholarship availability.
FSPA awards scholarships to advisers to take college courses or attend
professional workshops to improve their media skills.
Adviser Assistance
The executive board and the Professional Activities Committee provide
support for scholastic journalism statewide and for individual advisers.
