OAH Rewards Negroes with Guns

The Organization of American Historians names Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power its 2006 Erik Barnow Award recipient. The award is given in recognition of outstanding programming on television or in documentary film concerned with American history. Past winners include Ken Burns, Henry Hampton and Barak Goodman. The Documentary Institute is a two-time recipient of the award. It was also named the 2001 Erik Barnow Award winner for its documentary, Freedom Never Dies: The Legacy of Harry T. Moore.

Negroes with Guns to premiere on Independent Lens

Negroes with Guns will premiere on Independent Lens on PBS on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at 10 p.m. Check www.pbs.org/independentlens for local viewing times.

Home and educational distribution rights for Negroes with Guns have been sold to California Newsreel. Considered a leading resource center for African-American feature films and documentaries, California Newsreel prides itself on bringing “cutting edge social interest documentaries to universities, high schools and public libraries.”

Official Selection, Documentary Feature Competition, Big Sky Film Festival

Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power will screen as part of the D.R.E.A.M. Film Series hosted by the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Georgia.

Winner, Best Feature Audience Award at Detroit Docs. The festival featured more than 100 national and international films.

Nominee, IDA/ABC News VideoSource Award. Other nominees included Fahrenheit 9/11, Imelda and Chisholm ’72: Unbought and Unbossed.

Winner, Documentary Feature, 8th Annual UrbanWorld Film Festival. The New York based festival screened more than 103 films this year and is the largest U.S. festival dedicated to the exhibition of independent urban cinema.
