University Scholars Program

Announcement

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that the University Scholars Program (USP) will be seeking undergraduate participants for 2007-2008. The USP presents UF undergraduates with the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors while pursuing fundamental research, exploring scholarly inquiry, and developing new knowledge.

University Scholars receive a $2500 research stipend, and up to $500 in financial support for travel to a scholarly conference or to collect data. Scholars also have the opportunity to publish their work in UF’s online Journal of Undergraduate Research, and to present their research in the Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2007. Students apply to the department or college in which the faculty mentor is employed. All students must be undergraduate status at the time of the research, earning the first bachelor’s degree no earlier than December 2007. All University Scholars must register for at least one credit (suggested to be research credit) during Summer 2007.

Guidelines and Procedures

Program Description

The University Scholars Program is designed to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to engage in research under the supervision of a faculty mentor. Students propose a research project and apply for the program through the procedures established by the University Scholars Program. The student may propose a research project in any area that falls within the interest areas of the faculty of the College of Journalism and Communications. Normally, the major portion of the research is undertaken by the student during the summer semester and continued through fall and spring of the next year.

Eligibility

Students will ordinarily be enrolled in one of the majors within the College of Journalism and Communications. An overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher is expected. However, students with a lower overall GPA but evidence of higher achievement in their major coursework may ask a faculty mentor for special consideration.

Faculty may also serve as mentors for students enrolled in other colleges.

Requirements

Students are expected to fulfill all of the requirements set forth in the University Scholars Program guidelines. In addition to the administrative and procedural guidelines, students must complete a research paper and present its results in an appropriate forum. Details are available at www.scholars.ufl.edu.

Application and Selection Procedures

Applications are due March 1 and should be submitted to the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Journalism and Communications in Weimer Hall 2010. The application must include the official University Scholars Program application form, a one-page summary of the proposed research project, a letter of support and agreement from the faculty mentor, and a copy of the student's transcript.

The selection process will be conducted by the Associate Dean for Research in consultation with members of the college's Research Committee.

Topics and Mentors

While any faculty member in the College of Journalism and Communications may serve as a faculty mentor for a University Scholar, students can get an idea of the interests of graduate faculty members by consulting www.jou.ufl.edu/grad/gradfac.asp or by looking at the biographical information on any faculty member listed in the college's web site. Topics that fit any of the specializations of faculty and their research would be appropriate for a student's research work.
