Advanced Assistant/Associate/Professor
Media Regulation and Law
The Department of Telecommunication in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida seeks candidates for a tenured or tenure-accruing position in Electronic Media Regulation and Media Law at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, to begin August, 2010. The normal teaching load for tenure-track faculty members is two courses/semester, at least one of which will be at the undergraduate level. Summer teaching may be available, but is not guaranteed. This person will be expected to contribute to both the ongoing success of our undergraduate major in Telecommunication and to the graduate programs in Mass Communication, particularly the MA specializations in both Telecommunication and Mass Communication Law and the PhD in Mass Communication, in the following ways:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of regulation of the electronic media and media law.
- Advise and supervise MA and PhD students, and advise undergraduate students.
- Maintain a record of scholarship of national and international repute.
- Participate in professional service activities and faculty governance.
Requirements
- Earned a PhD in Mass Communication or related field
- Minimum of three years of university teaching and research experience in a tenure-accruing position
- Demonstrated experience supervising Master’s students required, experience working with doctoral students preferred
- For appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, a record of distinction in teaching and scholarship and a satisfactory record of professional service. For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, a accomplishments in teaching and scholarship that will lead to a record of distinction, and satisfactory professional service (The University of Florida prohibits faculty members to be hired at a rank above their current position)
- Ability to work with and foster a diverse faculty and student body
We will give preference to applicants with one or more of the following qualifications:
- Potential for fostering interdisciplinary teaching and research within the College of Journalism and Communications or with units elsewhere in the university, such as the Levin College of Law.
- International teaching or research interest or experience
- Participation in successful grant-writing activities
- Skills or experience that will enable the department and College to achieve its strategic goals
The Department of Telecommunication has approximately 415 upper-division majors. Our faculty also participate in the MA and PhD programs of the College of Journalism and Communications, which currently have 175 students working on various degrees. Our students can work under professional supervision at several broadcast facilities in the College: two commercial radio stations; an NPR-affiliate, a PBS affiliate and a low-power television station. We are one of six universities selected as bureaus of the new ABC On-campus program. The College is also home to departments of Advertising, Journalism, and Public Relations; The Brechner Center for Freedom of Information, The Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project and The Jerry Davis Interactive Media Lab.
The College’s newest initiative is the Center for Media Innovation and Research. Construction has been completed on the first phase, The 21st Century News Laboratory which will specialize in original, in-depth news reporting on issues of interest to local, regional, national and international audiences, and it will tell those important stories using new, experimental methods. A second phase will focus on strategic communication, and the development of a “think tank” on innovative media.
