Pretty in Ink

Nino ChiarelloNino Chiarello, a 28-year-old political science PhD student, has six tattoos on his right leg. As it is with art, each piece has a story.

Smiling sun: “I wanted something happy that I wouldn’t look back on and regret,” he says.

Vine: The anklet was about to be filled in when he abruptly stopped the artist. He asked to put a key on the vine as a reminder that if there are metaphorical doors in his path, he has the key.

Tree: Symbolizes his environmentalist beliefs. “If I end up regretting a tree on my leg, I know I haven’t turned out the way I wanted to.”

Silver moon with four ghost-like people: Represents the dark side. He designed this one himself. “It’s like the solitude and space that people need in order to really see themselves,” he says.

Octopus: “I guess I sort of identify with this rather than something big and tough.”

Fairy, with a chain on her ankle holding the anatomical drawing of a naked man by Leonardo Da Vinci: It symbolizes a story from Plato’s The Republic about people chained inside a cave who see shadows on the walls. The prisoners think the shadows are real. When one breaks out and sees the outside world, the others don’t believe his stories. The meaning behind the drawing of Da Vinci’s work shows the seed of humanity, but there is another reason behind this one. He adds, “Also, I wanted a penis.”
