alumni profilesStuart Newman makes final B-17G bombing run
Stuart Newman, JM 1946, "flew his 36th and possibly final mission Saturday aboard his beloved B-17G Bomber-nicknamed the 'Flying Fortress,' the hulking machine gun-laden aircraft widely considered a key to victory over Germany," according to a Feb. 17th story by Charles Rabin in The Miami Herald. The College Alumnus of Distinction, who owns the Stuart Newman & Associates public relations firm in Miami, was accompanied by his son, Andy Newman, ADV 1977, and grandson, Alan. Andy had arranged the surprise excursion (for $350) from the Weeks Air Museum at Kendall-Tamiami Airport. In World War II, Stuart was a first lieutenant and navigator in the Air Force and flew 35 combat missions out of England in 1944 and 1945. On one mission, his plane was forced to land in a farmers field in Belgium, where they were rescued. Rabin quoted him as saying, "The war had a purpose. You felt immortal.
This brings back some marvelous memories." |
