The defending national champion UF photojournalism students finished first again in the 2002 Hearst Photojournalism Competition.

In the first of three rounds,
Rob Witzel placed second, and Glenn Danforth finished third. They received $1,500 and $1,000 awards, respectively.

In the second round,
David Cone placed first in news/sports and Brian Tietz was fifth. They received $2,000 and $600 awards, respectively.

In the third round, picture stories by Meggan Booker and Lee Ferinden placed fifth and ninth, respectively, winning $600 and $500 awards, with matches to the Department of Journalism.

Professors John Freeman and John Kaplan, both associate professors of journalism, are faculty advisers to the students.

UF won the competition in 2001 for the first time, defeating Western Kentucky University, a ten-time winner.

All of the winning UF photos can be seen on the web.

Broadcast News

Two telecommunication seniors are semi-finalists in the Hearst Broadcast News Competition.

Julia Bagg, a senior from St. Petersburg, finished second, with stories about "Arts in Medicine," "Ginnie Springs" and "Theatric Auditions." The stories aired on WRUF-AM.

Hannah Field, a senior from Miami, filed stories aired on WUFT-FM. They were entitled "A Safe Place" (about homeless people in Gainesville) and an investigative piece on a "Sexual Predator at UF."

Overall, UF finished in second place, behind Syracuse University. Arizona State University was third.

Emmy Award

Mike Dello Stritto, TEL 2001, has won a National Student Emmy Award in the news magazine category for an investigative project on nursing homes. The story aired on WUFT-TV's North Florida Journal last year.

He will receive a $2,000 prize, with a match to the College.

Dr. Joe Glover, assistant professor of telecommunication, was his faculty adviser.
