They are the new kids on the block this fall.

Dr. John Sutherland, professor of advertising, became chair of the Department of Advertising.

Dr. Churchill Roberts, professor of telecommunication and co-director of The Documentary Institute, interim chair of the Department of Telecommunication on July 1.

Sutherland has served on the faculty since 1978, except for a two-year period when he worked for the Swanson-Holland advertising agency in Lincoln, Neb.

Sutherland earned B.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees at Texas A&M University and Ph.D. at Michigan State University.

Roberts joined the UF faculty in 1998 from the University of West Florida where he served as chair of the Department of Communication for 15 years.

The Documentary Institute film, Freedom Never Dies: The Legacy of Harry T. Moore, won the Erik Barnouw Award earlier this year. The Freedom Forum sponsored special presentations in Arlington, Va. and New York City.

Roberts succeeded Dr. F. Leslie Smith, TEL 1961, professor of telecommunication, who returned to full-time teaching after five years as chair. He joined the faculty in 1982.

Three administrators in the College received new titles in June. They are: Dr. John Wright, executive associate dean; Dr. Lynda Lee Kaid, senior associate dean for graduate studies and research; and Dr. Marilyn Roberts, associate dean for graduate studies and research.
