Alumni of Distinction
H.G.
Buddy Davis, JM 1948, MA 1954, was inducted into
the Florida Newspaper Hall of Fame in June. Davis spent 31 years on the
UF faculty and 27 years as an editorial writer and columnist for The
Gainesville Sun. He won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing
in 1971 and also received the Distinguished Service Award and the Wells
Key from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Yvette
Miley, TEL 1985, has been named vice president/news director
for WTVM-TV, the NBC owned-and-operated station in Birmingham. Miley was
honored in March 2000 as an alumna of distinction in the College. She
won Emmy Awards for her coverage of Andrew Cunanan/Gianni Versace murder
and the downtown Miami tornado and Dupont and Peabody Awards for coverage
of Hurricane Andrew.
She spent ten years with WTVJ-TV NBC 6 in Miami. She has served on the
UF Telecommunication Advisory Council.
Stuart
Newman, JM 1946, was one of 12 public relations professionals
named by PR WEEK magazine as PRs Golden Oldies.
John W. Jack Felton, president and CEO of
the Institute for Public Relations and an adjunct faculty member in the
Department of Public Relations; and Betsy Ann Plank,
former member of the UF Public Relations Advisory Council and one of the
Colleges 2000 Millennium Award winners, were also named. The magazine
called them PRs class of yesteryear.
Newman has run a Miami agency for 55 years. He was quoted as saying
he has no plans to retire, but does spend ten weeks a year at a retreat
in West Virginia.
Newmans son, Andy Newman, ADV 1977, is an associate
in the firm.
