Faculty promoted to higher ranks

Three members of the faculty have new titles this fall.

Professor Jean Carver Chance, JM 1960, MA 1969, has been promoted from associate professor to professor of journalism. Chance teaches courses in Applied Fact Finding, Reporting and Literary Journalism. Her research has been focused on reporting of health issues and she has held grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Her research has been published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Newspaper Research Journal and American Journalism, among others.

She was named to the Independent Florida Alligator Hall of Fame in 1997 and was Teacher of the Year in 1992 and Faculty Service Award winner in 1982 and 1995 in the College.

She worked professionally for several Florida newspapers, including The Miami Herald and Tampa Tribune. She joined the faculty in 1969.

Dr. Debbie Treise, ADV 1974, has been promoted from associate professor to professor of advertising. She teaches Advertising Campaigns and Seminars in Qualitative Research and Health/Science Communications. She has held research contracts in science communication with the Marshall Space Flight Center (Ala.) totaling more than $1 million and was named a University of Florida Research Foundation Professor, the first to hold that designation in the College.

She won the Faculty Research Award in 1995 and 1997.

Her research has been published in the Journal of Advertising, Health Marketing Quarterly and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, among others.

She spent 15 years in copywriting and sales for advertising agencies and radio/TV stations.

Treise joined the faculty in 1992 after completing an M.A. degree at the University of South Florida and Ph.D. degree at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville.

David E. Carlson, assistant in journalism and director of the Jerry Davis Interactive Media Lab, has been named the James M. Cox Jr. Foundation/Palm Beach Post Professor in New Media Journalism.

After a 20-year newspaper career, Carlson joined the faculty in 1993 from The Albuquerque Tribune, where he created one of the first online newspapers. He directed an experimental online newspaper in the College under a three-year grant from The New York Times.

He teaches courses in Communications on the Internet, Applied Journalism and Electronic Publishing and advises the student chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists.

He was honored with the Faculty Service Award in 1996.

He is the author of Recent History: The Birth of Digital Journalism.
