potpourriSunshine AwardThe Society of Professional Journalists has given its 2002 Sunshine Award to the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information. Dean Terry Hynes and Center director Sandra F. Chance accepted the award for "important contributions to open government" at the national convention Sept. 14. Golden GatorsThe communigator was honored this spring with a UF Golden Gators award as the “most outstanding newsletter” published on the campus. Dr. James L. Terhune, editor, and Professor John Freeman, co-associate editor, accepted the award. National SpeakerThe man PRWEEK magazine declared “the most influential public relations figure in the 20th century” will speak in the College on Nov. 21-22. He is Harold Burson, co-founder and chair of Burson-Marsteller, the world’s largest public relations agency. The panel which chose the 100 most influential people said Burson was “the most complete public relations professional in the history of the profession.” In 2000, Burson was one of 14 individuals honored by the College with Millennium Awards.
Amish AdventuresAssociate professor John Freeman worked as a photojournalist for six at The Record newspaper in Bergen County, N.J., this summer as the recipient of a fellowship from the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Twenty educators were selected from among 50 applicants nationwide for the fellowships to renew their teaching skills and promote journalism education.While at the Record (circulation 140,000), Freeman shot assignments using all digital equipment and published more than 40 photographs, including this “Amish Bakery Owner.” With a stipend, travel and housing allowances, the ASNE award was valued at more than $10,000. |
