Five of the 74 Alumni of Distinction in the College call this area home.
Al Burt, JM 1949, earlier
this year coordinated the Bonnie Melrose Festival, marking the 125th anniversary
of Melrose. He is a retired columnist for The Miami Herald and the author
of several books, including Al Burt’s Florida.
William G. “Bill” Ebersole,
JM 1949, MA 1957, retired as publisher of The Gainesville Sun in
1986 and became a realtor with Coldwell Banker/MMParrish. He,
his wife and son, Jim Ebersole, ADV 1989, made a gift of a UF seal
to the university.
H.G. “Buddy” Davis
Jr., JM 1948, MA 1952, is professor emeritus of journalism (31 years
on the faculty) and the 1971 Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial writing
(in The Gainesville Sun). He was inducted into the Florida Newspaper
Hall of Fame in 2001.
Ed Johnson, JM 1957, MA 1972, is the retired senior editor for the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. He is also a former editor and publisher of The Gainesville Sun. In recent years he has lived in Eastern Europe where he assisted newspapers in emerging democracies.
